I heard that they announced a 5070 GPU for the Framework 16. I'm currently on the first gen RX 7700S module and I could definitely use an upgrade (I was planning to upgrade once they release a better GPU), some games run quite badly (surprisingly titles like Cyberpunk and Atomic Heart run fine but then theres literal cozy games with stylized graphics that run worse than Cyberpunk because they are unoptimized like shit and have geometry nightmares). Ah and also raytracing isn't really feasible on my current GPU.
I'm not sure how much better the 5070 will be tho, and if I even want to run a nvidia card (I don't like running a proprietary driver, and it might also cause issues with Wayland).
It's 740€ but I might sell the RX 7700S for 400 bucks or so. Not sure tho because I CBA with shipping and taxes and all the legal mumbo jumbo so ideally if I upgrade I'd probably wanna sell or gift my old GPU to an irl friend.
A lot of gpu comparison websites don't even list the 5070 mobile yet, so it's hard to know how much better it'll be. If it's actually is like 2x better I think I might do it. I guess I'll just wait for people to benchmark it on the framework itself.
I'm currently leaning towards not upgrading and just waiting until they release a better AMD card for the framework instead.
What do yall think?

Re: Framework 5070 GPU - Upgrade worth it ?
I would wait for a new amd gpu release tbh . I have a 3070 in one of my laptops and the experience is MEH at best. Unless nvidia has fixed the thermals expect it to thermal throttle like instantly (for me it took like one round of cs2 on medium to high settings )
And yeah the linux situation is also ass (for me the proprietary drivers make firefox just randomly freeze )

tbf firefox would still be running on the amd igpu, the dgpu is only really for games
and i already have the situation where games or even random applications freeze or crash the entirety of sway

ah ... average gpu moment lol
does your laptop have a gpu mux switch ? if not stay FAR away from nvidia .. nvidia dual gpu setup without a mux is absolutely horrible on linux and will destroy your battery !!!

From what I found online it seems like the internal display goes through a mux switch , the gpu has one dp port directly wired through it the rest go through the cpu
so if you're not using an external display (at which point battery life doesn't matter i guess ) you should be fine !

Re: Framework 5070 GPU - Upgrade worth it ?
5070 is in a pretty decent spot, but it ultimately depends on vram imo. i'd wait for the amd 9070, and also pray it's not 8 gb.
there's a race condition that affects the 6000 and 7000 series on a bunch of versions when FSR is enabled that will kill the gpu driver into a soft reset, unfortunately any sway version prior to 1.11 didn't really have a recovery mechanism for when the gpu device crashes. 1.11 does i think but it's not great.
pray it doesn't end up corrupting the frame buffer and distorting text like mine is doing...
what mesa and linux version are you running. do you have FSR enabled?lizzy wrote: Wed Aug 27, 2025 5:51 pm and i already have the situation where games or even random applications freeze or crash the entirety of sway![]()

sway: swayfx version 0.5.3 (based on sway 1.11.0)
mesa: Mesa 25.0.7
no idea whether FSR is enabled (globally?), at least I didn't enable it directly.

Try bumping to mesa 25.1.7 and/or using the vulkan wlroots surface. FSR isn't installed globally so probably not a factor.lizzy wrote: Thu Aug 28, 2025 3:31 pmlinux: 6.12.34-gentoo-distnp93 wrote: Thu Aug 28, 2025 12:04 am
