I got access to a new server at work today and the default /usr/bin/python is still a symlink to python2
I get backwards compatibility but at this point python2 isnt even maintained anymore , right ? Like imagine the security vulnerabilities this has
And its also not a case of my workplace using an old distro, this is a maintained version of rocky linux . why are they doing that ?!!
i think it's this ideology that the less software changes, the more "stable" it is and hence the more outdated your software is the better - completely ignoring why software gets updates at all
Yeah this is also why i REALLY dislike the "never touch a running system" mindset
ALWAYS touch a running system when necessary !!! just have some common sense and dont do things that will obviously break it
like the funny part is also that at work we have EXTRA rpm repos to supply newer software , which is included in different rocky linux versions .
AND ITS NOT LIKE THIS IS STABLE !!! There are a LOT of things that still randomly break and we have to waste time troubleshoot !
i like how gentoo does it, stable and "testing" channels, where stable lags behind testing by ~1mo, with exceptions for things like a new version that triggers news bugs
alpine with edge and $version is also okay because $version doesn't lag behind too much
Honestly yeah gentoo is probably my favourite distro in terms of versioning
Though I dont really see enterprise users using gentoo or alpine on their servers , in my opinion fedora would probably be the best and sanest choice there
Fedora , from my limited time of using it seems to still have very up to date packages but isnt as unstable and bleeding edge as like arch . Also when using something like coreos its always possible to roll back which probably makes it somewhat more suited
